Sustainability

Klaas Puul supports various international initiatives for sustainably caught, farmed and processed prawns. The best known are:

  • Best Aquaculture Practices BAP logo
  • Marine Stewardship Counsel (MSC) Marine Stewardship Counsel logo
  • Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) Aquaculture Stewardship Council logo

The above initiatives contribute to the professionalisation of sustainable fishing and farming. Consumer demand for sustainable products is growing fast. We keep a close eye on changes and always endeavour to react pro-actively to developments.

Wherever possible, Klaas Puul opts for the most sustainable solution/type of fishing. We try to make our suppliers aware of sustainable principles and their importance, by defining them in our purchasing specifications, for example, and explaining them during visits.

Thanks to initiatives such as the MSC, there is increasing transparency with regard to which fish species are sustainably caught. This benefits the both of us – supplier – and the customer. Klaas Puul supports these initiatives and has taken the lead in obtaining the MSC certificate for prawn fishing. The major the aims are to reduce by-catch and seabed disturbance.

Our peeling station in Morocco is audited annually in accordance with the BSCI Code of Conduct, to ensure good working conditions. At the moment, we have been awarded BSCI Grade C.
