From family business to international seafood specialist
More than 50 years ago, Klaas Puul Sr. ran a fish shop with his brother in the well-known Frederik Hendrikstraat in Amsterdam. It was a place where craftsmanship and trade came together, and where the foundation was laid for what would later become one of the most recognisable names in shrimp processing.
From a young age, Evert saw that his path lay elsewhere. He started his own business in a lock-up garage, focusing on processing North Sea prawns. Every day he collected prawns from the fishing ports in the Netherlands, after which he delivered them to the home-peelers in Volendam and surrounding villages. The prawns were then washed, processed, packaged, and sold – mainly to customers in Belgium.
The method was simple, labour-intensive and based on trust, but it laid the foundation for what would later grow into a leading organisation.
From local craftsmanship to international professionalism
1968 – Official establishment of Klaas Puul B.V.
In 1968 the organisation was officially founded, marking a next step from entrepreneurship to corporate structure. Evert Mooijer Puul opened a new production location on Lupinestraat in Volendam, a site which, in a modernised form, is still one of our central production sites.
1985 – International step
The quality that was built locally soon found its way across the border. With the first exports to Germany and Belgium, Klaas Puul began to play a serious role in the European seafood market.
1990-2010 – Professionalisation and chain management
The organisation modernised rapidly. New production lines, stricter quality controls, automation and certifications such as ISO marked a new phase. The company evolved from a traditional family business into an enterprise with controlled processes and strong chain management.
2010-2020 – From family business to international organisation
During this period, Klaas Puul became part of a broader, international structure. Its artisanal roots made way for further scaling up, professional governance and a European positioning, while retaining the knowledge and mindset of the past.
Sustainability and supply chain transparency also became integral parts of the business strategy. The organisation operates according to European standards, with modern systems ensuring quality, reliability, and continuity at every step of the chain.
2020 – A New Future: Part of Sykes Seafood
In 2020, Klaas Puul became part of Sykes Seafood, making the company an even stronger international player with access to new markets, expertise, and economies of scale. Our family origins remain an important part of our identity, but today we operate as a professional, European organisation with broad responsibility across the entire seafood chain.
